History

Keyes Union School District has a rich and vibrant history that spans over a century, rooted in a deep commitment to education and community. Since its inception in 1905, the district has been dedicated to providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. From humble beginnings with just 39 students, Keyes Union School District has grown exponentially, now serving over 1,000 students from our community and beyond.

Original Keyes School

In its early years, Keyes was a bustling hub, known for its strategic location as a railroad stop and its prominent agricultural activities. As the community flourished, so did the educational opportunities for its children. The establishment of the Keyes School in 1905 fulfilled the aspirations of local families, who sought to ensure their children's access to education without having to travel long distances. Rose McGarr, the first teacher at Keyes School, exemplified the dedication and passion that would become synonymous with the district. With a modest salary of $65.00 a month, she laid the foundation for a legacy of educational excellence.

Over the decades, Keyes Union School District continued to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of its students and community. The formation of the Keyes Parent-Teacher Club in 1925 marked a pivotal moment, showcasing the collaborative spirit that still thrives today. Recognizing the need for a larger facility, the community came together to build a new school across the street in the 1920s. This second Keyes School stood as a testament to the collective determination and commitment to providing the best educational experience possible.

As the district progressed, new milestones were reached. In the fall of 1995, Keyes to Learning Charter School emerged, offering an innovative approach to education that combined homeschooling with professional guidance. Over time, the charter school experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 12 students to a thriving community of 300+. Keyes to Learning Charter School has become a beacon of educational flexibility, blending the benefits of classroom instruction and homeschooling to nurture well-rounded students.Spratling Middle School

To meet the demands of a growing population, Barbara Spratling Middle School opened its doors in January 2002, offering specialized education for 6th to 8th-grade students. This expansion alleviated the strain on Keyes Elementary School, which continued to provide exceptional education for TK to 5th-grade students. The district's commitment to holistic education was further reinforced in April 2017 with the establishment of the Keyes Union School District Office, centralizing key administrative departments to enhance efficiency and support the district's mission.

In August of 2019, Keyes Union School District celebrated a significant achievement, marked by a joyous ribbon-cutting ceremony. The opening of the Keyes to Learning Charter Schools Middle/High School campus represented not only a physical expansion but also a testament to the district's unwavering dedication to educational excellence. The relocation of the campus to the heart of the Keyes community solidified the district's commitment to providing students with a nurturing and accessible learning environment.

With the unwavering support of parents, teachers, and the entire Keyes community, the legacy of Keyes Union School District will continue to flourish for generations to come.
